Developing the Tarot Deck

"While wishing to remain faithful to the symbolism of the Rider-Waite deck, my intention is to create a setting that isn't constrained by any specific geographical or historical setting. When working on the backgrounds I find myself gazing into the emptiness of the page, waiting for structures and landscapes to emerge. Often these have roots in childhood imagination, mythology and fairy tales, but all manner of things float to the surface of consciousness. These impressions are obviously influenced by my perception of the archetypes emodied within whichever Tarot card I am currently working upon. The artistic process itself is not unlike giving oneself a very long and extensive Tarot reading, thus once I’d decided to do Major Arcana I felt it was important to follow The Fool’s journey and work through each card in order. Certainly it has been an enlightening experience so far."
